Hiraizumi Sakura Report 2022・特集！　平泉の2022年度桜レポート

春がいよいよ本格的に平泉にやってきました。いつの間にか野草や花、そして新緑の樹の青々とした姿を見えてきました。日が長くなり、天気もたいぶ暖かくなってきました。そして、季節の目印である桜の花がきれいに咲きました。

数多くの方々に好まれる桜はわずかな時期に花を見せますが、そういうはかないものだからこそ、短期間に精一杯見ようとする方も少なくありません。ハイキングや散歩、花見、ピクニック、観光、または結婚式などのような大きなイベント、様々な楽しみ方もあります。

もちろん、平泉町にも桜がいっぱい咲いていて、毎年そういうカラフルな景色を求める方々が訪ねてくれます。なお、現時点では平泉の桜は、あいにく、ほとんど散ってしまったところです。ただ、先月のプレビューからつづきまして、今月は今年の本来の桜の様子をいっぱい取材してきました！この場で紹介させて頂きたいと思いますので、来年の平泉の旅の予定には是非参考にして下さい！

まずは平泉の観光先といえば、世界遺産に登録されている毛越寺と中尊寺の両寺が浮かぶと思いますが、いずれももちろん桜が見られます。駅に着く場合は、毛越寺の方が近いですが、隣接している観自在王院跡もあります。こちらも世界遺産の歴史跡であり、本来は寺院でしたが、現代では浄土庭園だけが残る歴史公園となっています。池の近くには2種の桜が共に立ち、とてもきれいな一角になっています。

Spring is in full swing in Hiraizumi, and with it, comes all the typical trappings of the season in Japan. An explosion of wildflowers and fresh greenery, more sunlight and longer days, warmer (though sometimes wetter) weather, and birdsong in the air. And of course, one of the hallmarks, the sakura – cherry tree – blossoms.

While a favorite for many, these short-lived flowers typically bloom and shed in the span of only a scant few weeks, meaning that many sakura-spotters pack as much time outdoors as they can into the blooming period. Typical activities include walks or hikes to the most scenic spots, picnics or fairs at parks, and some even plan life events like weddings to take advantage of the colorful backdrop!

Hiraizumi, of course, is no exception. And following up last month’s preview, which used pictures from previous years, we’ve been busy gathering plenty of snapshots from this year’s sakura season! The flowers here are already blowing away now, replaced with young, green leaves, but if you weren’t able to make it this year, or are planning a Japan trip for the future… Here’s what you can expect!

First of all, two popular destinations in town are the World Heritage temples, Mōtsū-ji and Chūson-ji, and you can find sakura at and around both. First of all, on your way to Mōtsū-ji, you’re likely to pass the historical park neighboring the temple, Kanjizaiō-in. This was once a temple as well, and as a historic site is part of Hiraizumi’s World Heritage, though now only the garden grounds and central pond remain, but the scenic little patch of sakura here is worth a look.

毛越寺の境内に入ると、桜の木が実はちょっと数少ないが、ちょうどいいところに立たされ、12世紀の寺のの形で復元されている浄土庭園の景色を強調しています。本堂前の広場では、枝垂桜が一本立っていて、周辺の新緑に対してピンク色が好対照も見せますし、もう少し先に行けば、開山堂の近くに枝が参道までぶら下がっている双木もありまして、自撮りなどにはいいスポットです。

Inside Mōtsū-ji Temple proper, there aren’t a large number of sakura to find, but the trees there are placed strategically and serve as wonderful highlights to the garden scenery, the design of which has been preserved in near-perfect condition since the garden’s creation in the early 12^th century. Look for a few weeping sakura, one in the entry courtyard framing the Main Hall, and another on the far shore of the pond, that create a spot of colorful contrast against the fresh green. There are also a few tall-reaching trees on the way to the Kaisan-dō, or Founder’s Hall, one of the first stops in the garden, that hang over the path, making for a good candid spot.

普段、景勝とは思われないでしょうが、寺園を巡ってから、実は隣の駐車場にもとてもきれいな桜の並び木もあります。駐車場を背にして木の近くで歩くと、接しているいささ小川の音も耳に入って中々気分のいい一角に感じられます。また、駐車場内にある「きんいろパン屋」の焼きたてのパンも味わいながら楽しむのもいいでしょう。木の向こう側には宿泊施設の「浄土の館」があり、この桜並木を面しています。

While one might not normally consider it the most flattering foreground, you can also take a look around the parking area next to the temple for a line of attractive sakura, fronted by a short channel of water. After visiting the temple, you can enjoy a fresh treat from the Kin-iro Bakery, who have a small store inside the parking lot, and walk under the sakura to enjoy the trees and the sound of the water. The trees also handily screen the parking lot from view for guests at Jodo no Tachi, a small, affordable hotel just on the other side of the treeline.

毛越寺から中尊寺の方へ向かうと、方々のほとんどは平泉の中心を通る県道300号をとおります。県道の中尊寺までの間の一分には両側に石畳も設置され、すいせんと共に桜の並木が続いています。この風景は平泉町の桜名所として高く評価されていますので、見逃さないようにして下さい！徒歩や自転車、車やバス、どんな手段で通ってもきれいです。

If you set out from here to Chūson-ji, you’re likely to follow the main road, prefectural route 300. This leg of the highway features charmingly landscaped sidewalks, set with cobblestones and lined with short hedges, daffodils, and, of course… Sakura trees! This is one of the most well-known sakura spots in Hiraizumi, and you can enjoy it on foot, by bike, or from your bus or car seat.

県道を入ったところに近く、道路の右わきにある背の高い桜を見てみてください。枝が広いたくましい桜なので、近づくとすぐ分かると思いますが、実はその桜の後ろには平泉のもう一つの歴史的な神社があります。少し奥まった所ですが、ここの白山妙理堂は1763年で再建された数百年立っているものです。

Shortly after the turn onto route 300 towards Chūson-ji, watch on the right-hand side for a single sakura tree next to a break in the fence, and a couple of taller trees rising up just past it, a little off the road. This is the home of the Hakusan Myori-do shrine, and the shrine building is among Hiraizumi’s oldest standing historical structures! The unassuming little shrine was rebuilt most recently in 1763, and is handily secreted away in a private little copse, which includes a few impressively tall sakura you can spy from the road.

もう一つこの通りでおすすめなところは、ちょうど中間あたりのところにある「夢乃風」という食堂です。ここは砂利駐車場の一本桜が目印です。ここの桜はちょっと高めですが、食堂の窓辺の席からちょうど目線の高さになり、素晴らしい風景が見えます。この食堂では餅やはっと汁のような地域料理、そばやうどんも提供しています。

Along the way, also look out for Yume no Kaze, a small café and restaurant with one particularly tall, lovely sakura in their yard. You can enjoy a meal, including traditional regional dishes like mochi, or hatto soup, or just have a breather with tea or coffee and an ice-cream cone. Try for a window seat, or borrow the bench outside.

いよいよ中尊寺に着くと、来訪者のほとんどが表参道である月見坂を登っていきます。少し急な坂ですが、上にたどり着くと東物見展望台があります。東の平泉町や衣川、そしてその向こうの山まで見渡せる広い一景が坂に植えている桜に見事に枠付けられています。

Once you arrive at Chūson-ji, you’ll probably join most people in following the path from the front gate, climbing Tsukimizaka Hill. It’s a bit of a climb, but keep at it, and you’ll be rewarded with a lovely view from the Eastern Lookout. The hillside directly below the viewing platform is filled with sakura, stretching up and framing the view, which looks out over East Hiraizumi and the Koromogawa river. You’re likely to see even more sakura trees from a distance, dotting the townscape below and the mountains across the valley with little puffs of color.

さらに境内を進むと本堂の門が見えてきます。本堂前の広場に入ると、絵馬や寺の大きな鐘の近くに一本桜があります。広いところにしてはこの一角が落ち着いた雰囲気を出していて、風に踊らされる絵馬のカランコロンと音がして、とてもと心が安ぐ風景です。

Heading into the temple grounds, you can find a nice little tree in front of the Main Hall, next to the hanging ema prayer placards, which accents the lovely courtyard. The sight of the flowers ruffling in the breeze while the placards brush against each other with their soft wooden tones makes for a contemplative mood to briefly enjoy the scenery.

その他、金色堂の覆堂の前に、もう一つの桜木があります。ここは記念写真にとても向いているところです。また、弁天堂の池の上に枝を伸ばしているちょっと細めで優雅な桜がありまして、ご参拝の際は池の渡橋で見えることもできるでしょう。

Elsewhere, look for a similar single tree that offers a great photo opportunity in front of the Golden Hall, and a couple of trees that hang out over the pond ringing the Hall of Benzaiten, creating a lovely backdrop for the unassuming little shrine.

この広場から、金色堂と讃衡蔵の間の横道を通れば、中尊寺の坂上駐車場があります。車やタクシーを使い、ここで降りる方々なら、すぐ分かると思いますが、駐車場の向こう側には広い庭と、花の量も形もとても良い桜の並びがあります。こちらの広いスペースはとても日差しがいいので、花の良い色が引き出されます。

Down a side path between the Golden Hall and the Sankozo Museum, you’ll reach the temple’s rear parking lot. (Or, if you caught a cab, you’ll likely be dropped off here.) The small parking area faces a wide open yard, and a line of sakura trees blooming with very pleasing and typical round canopies. The shade from the tall redwoods and pines vanishes in the open yard, and the midday sun lights up the colorful blossoms.

そして、中尊寺の境内の奥にある白山神社とその能舞台を通り過ぎると、カフェ・レストランの「かんざん亭」があります。この庭の桜はまだ少し小さいけれど、おしゃれなカフェとその庭にとても似合っています。また、境内を巡ってお疲れな場合は、ここでコーヒーやティーの一服と共に軽食もとるのもいいでしょう。

And finally at Chūson-ji, at the rear of the temple complex just past the Hakusan Shrine and its historical outdoor Noh stage, you can find the Kanzantei café, whose yard opens into another sunny clearing with some cute, somewhat shorter sakura. The café is also another good place to find refreshments and a snack or light lunch.

最後に、寺の他には、平泉の文化遺産センターでも立派な桜が見られます。センターはちょうど毛越寺と中尊寺の間にあり、平泉町と世界遺産の文化財の歴史を語る無料施設です、玄関前には町内で最も長生きの桜の一つが立っています。この樹齢５０年の老木は枝が広くて、毎年花をいっぱい咲かせていますので、平泉の歴史を学ぶのと共に是非おすすめです。

Our final stop this year is the Cultural Heritage Center, located between Mōtsū-ji and Chūson-ji. The Center has exhibits and displays with plenty of information about Hiraizumi’s history and founding, and the history of its temples and other World Heritage sites, and is a great way to understand the importance of the historical sites you can find in Hiraizumi. It’s also home to one of Hiraizumi’s older sakura, a grand old tree that has been standing for over 50 years! The tree has wide, full, and low-hanging flowers, convenient for posing for photos when you visit the center.

桜がいっぱい咲いている平泉町では、ここではお伝えできていない桜スポットもまだまだありますが、これらのおすすめを参考になれば嬉しいです。世界中の桜好き、そしてこれから平泉での観光を考えている方々には、来年の平泉の桜も楽しみにしていただきたいです。

With sakura trees to be found just about anywhere you look in Hiraizumi, you’re likely to find a few places we weren’t able to feature here, but we certainly hope this is a good start, and gives you some idea of how to plan out your visit for next year’s sakura season!
