New Year, New Experiences

いよいよ平泉にも新しい一年がやってきました。毎年そうですが、新年と共に新しいことも、きっと、いろいろ来るでしょう。皆さんは何か新しいことに挑戦しようと、決意はされているでしょうか？そんな皆さんには、平泉で体験できる新しいことを少し紹介させていただきたいと思います。

平泉の独特な魅力の一つは歴史文化の伝承です。そしてその歴史文化を形として未だに見られるのが、平泉の世界遺産です。新たな体験を通して、それらの世界文化遺産をさらに深く感じることは、平泉の文化伝承もより深く感じることにもなります。その体験の仕方の一つはお寺の座禅体験です。

平泉では、中尊寺や毛越寺で座禅の体験をすることができます。集中力を高められる他、参加者が世界遺産のお寺のお坊さんの日常の一面を味わうこともできます。お坊さんが座禅の座り方、呼吸のアドバイスなどを指導してから、座禅を組んでいる形もチェックしてくれます。(また、あまりリラックスし過ぎてしまった人を、禅杖で肩を叩いて起こしてくれます。)

It’s a new year in Hiraizumi, and as with every new year, it brings with it all kinds of new things, both challenging and promising. Have you made any resolutions? Made plans to try something new in the new year? It’s in that spirit that we wanted to introduce a few unique experiences you can enjoy while you visit Hiraizumi, things that you won’t find just anywhere.

A large part of Hiraizumi’s unique appeal draws on its long cultural history, and our world heritage sites represent that history. Finding unique ways to connect with these sites is a special way to connect with and experience Hiraizumi’s history on a deeper level. One way might be to try your hand at a zen meditation session at one of the world heritage temples, led by a real buddhist monk.

Both Chūson-ji Temple and Mōtsū-ji Temple offer morning meditation to groups of 10 or more. In addition to the benefits of a meditation session, like reducing stress and sharpening one’s concentration, this is a way to experience a glimpse into the life of a monk. One of the resident monks at the temple will lead the session, offering advice on breathing techniques and seating posture. And if anyone should happen to relax a little too deeply and nod off… the monks patrol the room with a long, thin paddle-board, and will helpfully bring you around with a slap on the shoulder!

一月に見られるもう一つの独特な伝承は「蘇民祭」という行事です。東北や岩手県の各地で行われますが、平泉の場合は毛越寺の二十日夜祭と共に毎年１月２０日に開催されます。参加者は大寒の中、ふんどしを着て大きな松明をもたげながら、お寺まで行列で進む祭りです。隣町の一関では２月にも「水かけ祭り」を行い、似たようにふんどしにした参加者は観客がかけてくれる水を浴びながら掛け技する祭りです。

いずれも中々挑戦的な行事ですが、勇気のある方がいらっしゃいましたら、参加可能です。今年は残念ながら中止となってしまいましたが、来年平泉を訪ねる機会があれば、ユニークな体験をしてみてはいかがでしょうか。

Another very unique Tohoku tradition can be seen in Hiraizumi in the form of the soumin-sai, a new year celebration commonly held in January or February. What these typically have in common is participants stripping down to only a loincloth to brave the winter cold in some sort of procession. In Hiraizumi’s case, the event is part of Mōtsū-ji’s Hatsukaya-sai New Year’s celebration, held on the 20th, and participants carry hefty pine torches in a parade as they march to the temple. In neighboring Ichinoseki, they hold the Mizukake matsuri, or “water-throwing festival”, where not only do you face the cold, but onlookers splash freezing water on you as you race through the streets in a mini-marathon!

Advance notice is required, but it’s possible to apply to join in the events, if you’re feeling brave enough to face the freezing temperatures. The festivals were unfortunately cancelled this year, but keep it in mind for your future travel plans. A soumin-sai makes for a memorable addition to your visit, whether you participate or just observe and cheer them on.

寒さとの出会いを求めない方々には、平泉の芸能歴史文化を楽しめる漆塗り体験もあります。
平泉を創立した奥州藤原氏が、技術の優れた工芸者を平泉に招き、東北で豊かに取れた金砂を使った優雅な工芸文化を育てました。そこで生まれた工芸の一つが、三代秀衡氏の名を冠した秀衡塗。

特徴的な秀衡塗は、明治・大正にかけて作り方が消えてしまったと思われましたが、翁知屋という漆塗屋で研究され、再び製造されることになりました。今は漆塗り体験も提供していて、秀衡塗や工房の歴史の説明を聞いた後、食器やアクセサリーへの漆の絵付ける体験も楽しめ、出来上がった作品も持ち帰ることが出来ます。

If you’re interested in a less tooth-chattering experience, you can also explore Hiraizumi’s artistic history through a hands-on lacquer painting workshop. Hiraizumi’s founders, the Oshu Fujiwara clan, took advantage of their wealth by hiring craftsmen and artisans from the capital cities. One result of the influx of skilled artisans was the advent of a style of lacquerware bowls known as Hidehira-Nuri, after the third Fujiwara ruler, Hidehira, who is believed to have commissioned it.

Once thought to be lost, the style was rediscovered and revived by an area lacquerware workshop, Ōchiya, and is their specialty today. As part of the lesson, you can enjoy a brief introduction to the Hidehira-nuri style, and the workshop’s history, before the owner takes you through painting your own set of tableware, or a small accessory, like hairpins or phone straps.
