Hiraizumi’s Newest Historical Museum!・平泉を知って行こう！平泉の世界遺産ガイダンスセンター

東北は自分なりの観光の魅力がいっぱいある地方です。例えば豊かな自然環境で安らぎの気分を体験できるほか、東北人が誇りに思っているおもてなしや地域の農産物・地元料理を味わうこともできます。そしてまた、平泉では、800年も数える文化伝承を感じることできます。

North Japan has many things to recommend it in terms of tourism opportunities. For instance, you can enjoy the small-town hospitality (a point of pride for the northern people of Tohoku), the natural scenery, fresh air, and clean water, and the fresh, locally-grown produce and local specialties on the menu. And in Hiraizumi, you can also appreciate a deep and vibrant cultural history, with roots that reach back centuries.

平泉の歴史は12世紀の頃から開かれ、藤原清衡が奥州の中心であった平泉に本拠にしました。平泉では、清衡がまちづくりで土地を広げた他、広大な中尊寺を建立しました。当時の豊な黄金文化を未だに見れる中尊寺や毛越寺の他、平泉町内には藤原氏と平泉の文化遺産とゆかりのある歴史跡もたくさん残っています。その史跡の一つに藤原氏の政庁の場所であった柳之御所遺跡です。

Hiraizumi’s founding stretches back to the turn of the 12^th century, when Fujiwara no Kiyohira decided to make it his center of power, and set about creating public works and, especially, dramatically expanding the facilities at Chūson-ji Temple. Besides temples, which still survive to this day, many remains, artifacts, and historical sites dating from this period of flourishing culture have been found in Hiraizumi to date, including the center of the Fujiwara clan’s political structure, Yanagi no Gosho.

柳之御所は当時伝来の資料に述べられる「平泉館」の場所と考えられています。以前は藤原氏の官邸だと見られていましたが、発掘調査の結果により、今では政府業務の中心だと推定されています。藤原氏と平泉が当時の奥羽にとっても権力の中心的な存在であったことで、この柳之御所が東北の中心だったとも言えるでしょう。

Yanagi no Gosho is the name of the site in Hiraizumi that hosted the complex named in documents from the period as Hiraizumi-Kan. Once believed to be the official residence of the heads of the Fujiwara clan, rulers of Hiraizumi, further investigation has revealed this was instead likely the administrative center of the Fujiwara’s government. Hiraizumi and the Fujiwaras being, at the time, the predominant authority, this made Yanagi no Gosho the effective seat of power for the entire north.

なお、現在の柳之御所遺跡では、本来の形に見えるものが少ないけれども、発掘調査による堀・園池・掘立柱建物・井戸などの遺構の他、大量の出土品も現地で発見されています。その中は土器や陶磁器、そしてその破片。国製なものは日本の各地からも集めったと考えられますが、一部が中国製とみられ、輸入品だと考えられます。それぞれ遠くからこの平泉に集めるには、当時で、かなりの費用が必要だったでしょうが、当時の平泉はそれほど繁栄している地域だったとのことです。

Today, very little remains visible of the structures and other features at the site, but archeological excavations have revealed a large amount of historically valuable remains and artifacts. Deposits of ceramic serving trays, used at banquets when entertaining official guests, and writing implements speaking to the everyday business of running the government have been found, as well as fine ceramics, artwork, and valuables imported from all across Japan, and even from China and the Korean Peninsula. This would have taken considerable expense at the time, a testament to the prosperity of Hiraizumi.

史跡の一部を保存し再現していて、歴史公園として観光客が自由に見学できます。展示点や案内看板も設置していますが、更に詳しく知りたい方には、向かい側に立っている「平泉世界遺産ガイダンスセンター」をおすすめします。昨年11月にオープンしたこの新施設では、平泉の世界文化遺産の情報がたくさん展示されている他、柳之御所とその他の連結がある遺跡・史跡も紹介されています。

The site itself has been partially restored, with open-air exhibits, informational markers, and some original garden landscaping, and is open to the public to visit freely. For more information, however, you need only walk across the road to find the Hiraizumi World Heritage Information Center. The Center, newly opened as of November, is home to a great deal of information on Hiraizumi’s World Heritage sites, but also other associated historical sites, like Yanagi no Gosho.

藤原氏と平安時代の平泉の歴史背景の情報の他に、文化財や遺跡の当時の様子を再現したスケール模型とイラスト・パネル展で、本来の姿を見ることができます。また、柳之御所とその他町内の各所で発掘した出土品の展示と説明で、当時の人々の生活や生き方について想像もつくでしょう。

In addition to exhibits on the background history of the Fujiwara clan and Hiraizumi’s founding, you can also see scale-model recreations or illustrations of many of the historical sites to give you a better idea of how they appeared during their time. There are also a great deal of historical artifacts excavated from around Hiraizumi, giving you a closer look into the way they lived and worked.

センターは英語の説明も展示に出ているし、その他多言語の案内資料と音声ガイドも提供していますので、訪日の観光客も問題なく拝観できます。平泉の歴史文化への紹介として、世界遺産を訪れる前にもいいですが、例えば世界遺産を巡って感じたことを結びつける拠点としてもいい。又、向かい側に位置している道の駅が一日の観光の思い出として地域産物とお土産を買うにも便利です。

The exhibits include English explanations, and additional handouts and a pre-recorded audio guide are also available to supplement your visit to the center. It makes a great first stop as a primer on Hiraizumi’s history before you visit any historical sites. Or, you can save it to cap off your explorations in Hiraizumi, and at the same time visit the nearby Michi-no-Eki to find all kinds of locally made gifts, produce, and confections.
